What is Microneedling & PRP?

Our practice, led by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Aldona J. Spiegel, now offers microneedling using the SkinPen, plus an application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). With this innovative handheld device that punctures little holes in your neck, face, or chest skin to stimulate your skin's renewal response. As an extra bonus, your own PRP may be applied to the same area to help cells heal and grow new skin cells. Together, these treatments can lessen the appearance of scars, wrinkles, fine lines, large pores, and other skin issues. The feel of your skin could be greatly improved, appear smoother, and without damaging your epidermis. Who Qualifies?

For microneedling with PRP, we will take a good look at your skin before making a recommendation on your treatment. We evaluate the health of your skin when you come in for a consultation. Uneven skin tone, dry skin, rough texture, loose skin, age spots, acne, wrinkles, and scarring are skin conditions that may benefit from a microneedling with PRP treatment. This therapy can also be used for sun damage that may have caused your skin to have a rough texture or hyperpigmentation.

How Is PRP Applied?

After the evaluation of your skin and if this treatment is deemed appropriate for you, we will first draw a vial of blood to make the PRP. The drawn blood will then be taken to our laboratory for the separation process where the platelets, growth factors, and stem cells will be separated to make a dose of PRP for injection and/or application. Your microneedling treatment involves the use of SkinPen technology to create small holes in your skin. The short needles will not harm your skin. This process stimulates the production of collagen. Once the microneedling is done, the PRP serum will be placed on the epidermis to sink in, injected under the skin, or both.

Healing time for microneedling

Following your microneedling with PRP therapy, you could encounter some swelling, bruising, and redness. We recommend that you avoid the use of makeup, not to cleanse with abrasive skin cleansers, and not get into a swimming pool for three days following the session. Activities such as these can expose the treatment area to bacteria and chemicals, which could lead to damaging your skin. Limit your sun exposure or use protective measures when going outside. Final results are generally seen within several weeks as the skin works to repair and heal itself.
