What is a Breast Reduction?

The heft of large breasts, deep grooves in your shoulders from bra straps, and clothes that don't fit right are all reasons why women seek breast reductions. Our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Aldona J. Spiegel, has performed breast reduction surgery for numerous women in the Houston, TX area.

Women who desire a breast reduction usually seek out Dr. Spiegel to get back their body confidence and enjoy the life they want through surgical reduction of their breasts. This is a cosmetic surgery at Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D., which surgically takes off the excess breast fat and skin to redefine and reshape the breasts to a proportionate size. It also reconstructs the nipples/areolas and repositions them into their new higher place on the breast. In most cases, a breast lift is implemented to give a more taut and healthier appearance. Heavy breasts can cause pain and make it really uncomfortable to exercise in public. At Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D., we are here to listen to your concerns and give you options on what to expect from plastic surgery. Call and make a breast reduction consultation at our Houston, TX office.

Breast Reduction Qualifiers

If you are considering a breast reduction, you may have multiple valid reasons why you would like to have the surgery.

Asymmetry
If one breast is larger than the other, Dr. Spiegel can make your breasts the same size and shape (even if your natural ones are not).

Body image issues and mental well-being
Living in a body that is disproportionate because of a top-heavy chest may be very distressing to you. You may avoid doing normal activities, like swimming, trying on clothes, exercising, or anything that draws attention to your breasts. This may make you feel vulnerable and isolated, which has a negative impact on your mental health.

Limited movement
Anytime you are required or just wish to move, exercise, or stretch, you may have difficulty moving your upper body in a comfortable way. Because of the way the breasts jiggle, strain your back, or sweat, you may avoid moving in a way that causes you embarrassment.

Compressed nerves
When you sit or stand with a slumped posture, you risk doing some damage to your nerves. A compressed nerve may make your arm feel numb or like pins and needles in your arm, shoulders, and/or hands.

Physical pain
We understand that having overly sized breasts can take a toll on your shoulders, back, and core. It may be difficult to stand up straight, be flexible, jump, run, or any type of explosive movement.

Skin irritation
The delicate skin underneath large breasts is highly susceptible to painful bacterial or yeast infections, sores, or rashes on the underside of the breasts. If you sweat a lot at the gym or just living in the Texas heat, you may have a chronic irritation in your skin (with scars to prove it).

Stretch marks
As you age, you may develop stretch marks from pendulous, heavy breasts. They may have some color or look like translucent scars on the topside of your breasts.

Breast Reduction Surgical Reduction Technique

Before your actual day of surgery, you will have a private, one-on-one consultation with Dr. Spiegel to discuss all of the specific details needed to plan your procedure. Dr. Spiegel performs breast reductions as an outpatient surgery with you under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery is dependent upon many factors, including the complexity of the incisions, the amount of reduction, and the positioning of your areola and nipples. Liposuction is required for tissue and fat removal.

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Spiegel will first make the incisions (placement of the incisions will be based on what is being removed). She may perform a vertical or short scar reduction where incisions are performed around the areola and down the bottom side of the breast. If you are having surgery for extremely large breasts, an anchor-shaped technique will better suit your needs. Dr. Spiegel will cut around your nipple/areola complex, make a vertical incision down the underside of the breast, and finish the technique with an incision along the natural crease under your breast. Then, she can begin to take out the excess fat and mammary glands with liposuction. She will also excise the loose, hanging skin weighing down your breasts. If your nipples and areolas have to be moved, she will reposition them higher on your newly shaped breast. It is also possible for Dr. Spiegel to perform liposuction around your underarm area (commonly known as bra fat) for a better shape. Once all of the incisions are closed, you will be taken to our post-op recovery room to be monitored while you awaken from surgery.

Breast Reduction After Your Reduction

There will be aftercare instructions on how to care for your surgical incisions at home during your post-op recovery. We will answer any of your questions you may have before you are discharged. You are also welcome to call our office if you need assistance. Most of our breast reduction patients take about two weeks off from work to stay home and recover. No heavy lifting or strenuous upper body workouts for at least 4 – 6 weeks. Dr. Spiegel's scheduler will set up a follow-up appointment for you so we can check in on how you are doing.
