What is Breast Lift Surgery?

Sagging breasts can be enhanced with a surgery called a breast lift at Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D. Excessive skin can have your breasts looking deflated, elongated, and pointing downward. With a cosmetic breast lift, our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Aldona J. Spiegel, can reduce the excess skin and tighten up your healthy tissue to result in a more youthful, perky breast appearance. Known as mastopexy, Dr. Spiegel performs this surgery for women who have lost breast firmness, size, and shape because of breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, or a combination of these factors.

Being at an advanced age is not a great determining factor for the need for a breast lift. Women of all ages can show signs of breast ptosis. Heavy breasts developed at a young age can accelerate the stretching of the breast skin, no matter what your age. If you would like to see if you would qualify for a breast lift, we invite you to make a consultative appointment with Dr. Spiegel for a personalized skin assessment.

Do I Need A Breast Lift?

You may come to Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D. wanting fuller breasts with breast implants, but after a private assessment, you may realize that a breast lift is what you actually need. Because of the severity of your breast sag, you may want a lift to elevate the breasts to a perkier position. If you have nipples that point downward and your breasts appear stretched, a surgical lift can dramatically help their appearance. If you are contemplating a breast lift, you should be physically healthy and at a maintainable weight. Dr. Spiegel will plan out your surgery as your body indicates for surgical incision technique, how much skin to remove, and more before you schedule a surgery date.

surgical technique for a lift

Your breast lift surgery will be personalized for you, and Dr. Spiegel will make recommendations on the best way to proceed on your surgery day. In an outpatient setting using general anesthesia, Dr. Spiegel will perform your breast lift. The time it will take your surgery is dependent on the type of incisions made, how much skin is to be removed, and if the nipple/areola complex has to be reconstructed or repositioned. Dr. Spiegel may use an incision that goes around the areola complex and straight down to the natural crease of the underside of the breasts. The incisions may also extend the width of each breast on the natural fold. The stretched, inelastic skin will be taken off, and Dr. Spiegel will reposition your breasts, nipples, and areolas higher on the chest wall. Then, she will suture the incisions closed (unless you are having a breast implant placed as well).

If a breast lift is the only surgery being performed and your breast size after surgery becomes a concern post-op, then breast implants can be inserted at a later date.

Living with Lifted Breasts

After surgery, you will wear a medical compression bra to reduce swelling. A tiny tube (drain) is also inserted near the location of the incision to assist with excess drainage that can often occur after a breast lift. The post-surgical swelling usually goes away within a few days. Dr. Spiegel or a member of her team will provide specific incision care instructions to assist your healing process. Aesthetic results following a breast lift are most noticeable after a few weeks as the breasts settle in their new placement on your chest. Your breasts should appear naturally lifted, beautiful, and youthful.
