Your Plastic surgery Consult

The decision to have breast augmentation is personal. If you are thinking about having this surgery, it is essential you do it for yourself. The consultation process is dedicated to selecting the right implant that is appropriate to your body frame, desired breast size, and aesthetic goals. An important fact is that candidates considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to undergo treatment with silicone. Other options include gummy bear implants and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are other notable factors to decide.

Types of Breast implants

Both saline and silicone breast implant options are available at Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D. We can go over each type to determine which implants will best suit your goals, personal preferences, and body proportions to make the decision. Regardless of the type selected, each breast implant is made with a silicone elastomer shell with a translucent outer layer.

Saline breast implants
Pre-filled with sterile saltwater before your surgery, a saline breast implant can be adjusted during the placement if more or less saline is needed.

Silicone breast implants
The gel in a silicone breast implant can be filled before surgery, but one of the main surgical differences you will encounter is a long incision made on the breasts. Many patients say that silicone breast implants feel and move more naturally than a saline breast implant.

Gummy bear breast implants
As a cohesive silicone gel implant, the "gummy bear" breast implant will not leak if disturbed inside of your body and may hold their shape longer than traditional saline or silicone implants. They were also recently approved for use in the United States (after being available in Europe for many years).

Breast Size

Implant size is distinguished based on the number of CCs of saline or silicone used. To pick the right amount, Dr. Spiegel will look at how much original tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is common for Dr. Spiegel to make adjustments to the amount of filler that is put into your implants.

Breast Shape

Implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients choose a round shape. It often appears more natural while adding a fullness to the top portion of the breast that a majority of our augmentation patients desire.

Breast Profile

Breast implant profile refers to how far out the implant projects, or what is visible in a low to extra high range at the side angle.

How Is This Surgery Performed?

Breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient surgery with general anesthesia. You will go into surgery with a treatment plan (with incision placement, type of implant, and location of the implant placement already decided) for Dr. Spiegel to follow. The incisions will be made within the natural creases of the breasts. Your saline or silicone implant may be placed under the pectoral muscle or behind your breast tissue yet still over the pectoral muscle. Through the incision opening, Dr. Spiegel will surgically create a pocket and then put the implant into position. Afterward, Dr. Spiegel will close the incisions, bandage your skin, dress you in a sports bra, and send you to our post-operation recovery.

After Your Augmentation

Within a few days, the post-surgical swelling should dissipate, and your breasts should begin to feel more settled into their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can return to everyday activities within several days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be delayed for a minimum of a couple of months. Dr. Spiegel will advise you on how to proceed at your follow-up appointments. Our goal is to produce a beautiful outcome that allows you to feel more confident in this life-changing augmentation surgery.
