What About Breast Implants?

When faced with the decision to have breast reconstruction after mastectomy, you can rely on Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D. to design a plan to recreate your breasts with implants. Our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Aldona J. Spiegel, is available in Houston, TX to reconstruct your breast with outstanding results. When using your own body tissues in your breast reconstruction is not possible, or you have a failed autologous tissue flap reconstruction, you do have an option with breast implants. This treatment is usually performed in two stages.

The first surgery involves the placement of a tissue expander. Once the skin is adequately stretched in 4 – 6 months, the expanders can be removed, and your breast implants can be placed in the next surgery. After a one-on-one implant-based breast reconstruction consultation, Dr. Spiegel will create an individualized surgical plan. We will also work with you and your other medical providers to make sure the timing is right and if any of your surgeries can be combined for immediate breast reconstruction at Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D.

Types of Breast Implants

Although flaps are a common and successful method for breast reconstruction surgery, you may want to rebuild your breasts with the tissue expansion method and saline or silicone breast implants.

Your implant-based breast reconstruction will take place in an operating room with general anesthesia. Dr. Spiegel will make space using a tissue expander method. This means that she will create space with a tissue expander below the breast wall. She will also reshape your overall breasts and suture the incisions closed. Over the next 4 – 6 weeks, you will need to come to Dr. Spiegel to have it filled with saline. The area has to be properly stretched out for saline or silicone breast implants. After your breast reconstruction with breast implants, you may also want to improve the appearance of your nipple/areola complex. There are several procedures to rebuild the nipple/areola complex for attractive results. If you are interested in having your nipple/areola complex tattooed onto your reconstructed breast(s), you should talk to Dr. Spiegel during your initial consultation. She will discuss your options to help you decide whether you would like nipple tattooing to be a part of your treatment plan. This would be another appointment later in your recovery.

Considering BReast Implants?

You can have a private consultation for implant-based breast reconstruction at Aldona J. Spiegel, M.D. Every breast reconstruction is essentially customized. Dr. Spiegel will create your treatment plan from your medical and aesthetic needs and concerns. After examining you, she will make her recommendations on suitable breast reconstruction techniques. While Dr. Spiegel strives to create a natural appearance, your reconstructed breast(s) may not have the same look, feel, or sensation as your original breast(s). It is vital that you understand realistic expectations for results. You should get clearance from your oncology doctor to undergo reconstruction surgery and talk to Dr. Spiegel regarding any other medical conditions that may impact your recovery and appearance of your breasts.

Your Staged Reconstruction

There is no single reconstruction technique that is right for every patient. The best method for you will depend on your medical needs, aesthetic wants, and body proportions. In your initial consultation, Dr. Spiegel will explain your choices, including both flaps and implants. We want you to understand the advantages and drawbacks of each before you decide on your treatment plan. Whether you decide on implants or a flap, Dr. Spiegel will do her best to make your results look natural.

After Reconstructive Surgery

Surgical breast reconstruction is performed in several stages. Some patients will require an overnight stay — this is based on the actual phase of your treatment. Follow all of Dr. Spiegel's after-surgery instructions to control infection, bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. Over time, your reconstructed breasts with implants should look shapely and contoured. Even with breast implants, regular check-ups with breast exams and mammograms are important and recommended to check for new cancer growths.
